WordPress for Nokia

When I made my account on WordPress, I noticed they have official WordPress application for some platforms/devices like iPhone, iPad, Android. But I didn’t find an app for Nokia (Symbian) and I was surprised to see that. As iPhone, iPad and android Symbian is a very popular platform. So I search for an app on Symbian platform and found an application – WordMobi. I don’t really used WordMobi for writing and publishing any post, i just tried it for a while. WordMobi had most of those features usually needed but I didn’t like its text-based interface much. After that I didn’t search for more because mostly I used to do my blogging from computer and by email from mobile.

Today while I was reading some blogs, suddenly I thought to look once again if there any official or 3rd party WordPress application available for Symbian. I found an official WordPress application from http://dev.nokia.wordpress.org/. I think the application still in beta stage. Some additional plugins/add-ons/library need to be installed to run the WordPress application. Although installation was easy but it took long time to download and install those necessary plugins/add-ons/libraries. After some unsuccessful attempt finally I installed the app on my E63.

Here are some screenshots I took while using the application

After lunching the application first time, while I was inputting my password noticed a issue. Suppose my password is 12345, after processing 1 key while I pressed 2 key 1 got replaced by 2. Using a trick I able to type my password and got connected to my blog. Application developers need to look on the password input section 🙂

Using this application you can view, approve, delete, spam, reply comments. Create new post, assign category, tags, time, photos, videos, location (not available on 0.8.2 for S60 3.1) to post. Publish it or save it to local or blog draft. You can also view, edit, and delete your existing posts. You can create edit and delete page. You can see your blog stat and can manage multiple blog.

GUI of the application is nice but I felt like it’s targeted for touch screen devices mainly. On non-touch screen device I didn’t find it very user friendly. Still there are many users using non touch devices. I started writing this post on the mobile, I found I need to make some correction while I was writing, It was little difficult to navigate to the word/sentence I wanted to change. I thought paste some parts of the post I wrote in note but unfortunately this application doesn’t support copy/paste. So I saved this post as draft and later edited using computer and publish.

Overall WordPress for Nokia application is good. I hope they will improve more in feather release.

Writing on non-QWERTY

I am surprised to see how my typing proficiency has become on non-QWERTY keyboard. Yesterday while I was replying a sms, on my QWERTY phone (Nokia E63) with dictionary  on mode I wrote a message with 156 creators within just few seconds. Unfortunately while sending the message I found my phone not had enough credit to send it. So I tried to send that message from my mom’s phone (Nokia 1112), which is a non-QWERTY phone. First I was typing with T9 on mode but with T9 on I found it was very difficult to write what I wanted to, so I turned off T9. After many error and correction finally I completed the message in 4 minutes.

I am using this QWERTY phone for 10 – 11 months, in this time I almost lost my in typing skills on normal phones (non-QWERTY) 😉

Weight Machine….

I travel through metro rail for long time but never noticed those weight machines on the platforms that way, maybe because stations are usually crowded most time and trains are frequent.

If you stepped on the machine and put a two one rupee coin in it, it will give u a ticket with your fortune and weight printed on it. When I was younger I took my weight on such machine few times.

Yesterday while I was getting ticket a train just passes by. After getting ticket when I go down to the platform there was just few people waiting for the next train. I usually get on the first compartment of train, so I walked to the opposite end of platform. While I was walking across the station I noticed those weight machines and remembered many days ago a friend asked my weight and I told her an average, because I haven’t took my weight long time.

There was four machines on platform, last one was near the place, where I usually stand and wait. So I pass by three machines and thought to took my weight no that last machine. On that time lots of people entered on platform from other side. While I was near the machine a person stepped on the machine so I stand beside, then few more people came behind him and make a little queue. One after one three person took there weight, and then the train shows up and I leave on it, my wish was not fulfilled. Maybe someday later I would try again.

I feel that funny and surprising, rarely sometime I saw some person stepped on those machines but just the time I thought many other people thought the same.

PC suite and OVI suite…. my views

Ever since I started using Nokia smartphones, I’m using Nokia PC suite to manage, sync, backup my phones with my pc. Now Nokia has a upgraded suite – OVI suite. In many sites, blogs and forums I read about peoples view and comparisons, finally I came up with my views about this applications.

looks (interface)

PC suite have a simple interface, cover a small part of my screen, on the other side OVI suite has a fancy looking rich graphical interface, that big interface covers most part of my pc’s screen.

Main screen

PC suite displays some useful information like battery meter, memory meter, recent SMS, calendar entries in main screen. Ovi suite home screen also displays contacts, messages, photos and music. While point mouse over them , they slide beautifully. But I didn’t find it any useful.

Although Contact management is almost same in PC suite and OVI suite. PC suite still have fields like older phone used to had. Field section has been updated in ovi suite .

PC suite have it’s own calendar management interface. From Nokia communication center I can make new/edit/delete appointment, task, memo directly on phone’s calendar. Ovi suite doesn’t have such feature yet, so need to use a PIM application (e.g. Outlook) on PC and have to sync them with PIM application.

PC suite and OVI suite both have the feature to create, read, reply, forward message from pc. Ovi suite has a advantage in messaging section it shows SMS in conversations , same like shows in IM applications. Also has a option to create smart folder/filter for messages. It filters messages according to defined criteria.

While deleting messages from PC suite it directly delete messages from phone. OVI suite have 2 section for message, device and PC memory. while sync messages it makes a copy of all messages in pc and while deleting messages I need to delete messages from both location separately. If there is a option to choose from where I would like to delete e.g. from PC/ from device/both, that would be better.

Along with sync PIM (e.g. contacts, calendar & task, notes) PC suite also has a option to sync files, like a briefcase. This is a useful feature for me, I often use some office files (e.g. .doc, xls, ppt), from my phone or from pc, by file sync I can have same, up to date version of files in both locations. Ovi suite doesn’t have this feature yet.

While phone connected with USB, PC suite shows notifications for new message, incoming call, battery low. Incoming call notification also give option to receive/reject/response via sms option. On the other side ovi suite also shows notifications for new message and battery low but incoming call notification not available yet.

Making calls

While phone connected with USB PC suite let me make calls to my phonebook contacts directly from pc. It would be better if I could talk and hear using pc’s microphone and speakers. Unfortunately this feature is only useful while I’m using a headset/handsfree. Ovi suite doesn’t have this feature yet.

Video converter

PC suite have a feature to transfer video. While transferring videos from pc to phone it convert videos suitable for playing in phone. OVI suite doesn’t have this feature yet.

Map & software updater

Pc suite needed to install map updater, map loader and software updater separately like Add-ons/ standalone app. Ovi suite have those built in.

OVI Cloud

Now everything is moving to cloud computing. OVI suite has option to sync contacts, photos with my online OVI account.

Few weeks ago I tried to download map updater and software updater. Every time Nokia site was redirecting me to ovi suite download section, it seems Nokia want all users to move to ovi suite.

I think before making all users to use ovi suite Nokia should consider those features and functionality they have already putted in PC suite and make the ovi suite more stable and suitable to all types of users.

Strange problem with Fingerprint reader

I have a HP Pavilion dv6800 notebook running on windows 7 x64. Till yesterday fingerprint reader was working fine. Today when I swap my finger it shows an error message “Unsuccessful fingerprint scan”. I tried many times with different finger but same message shows every time.

Then I login by typing the password and uninstall DigitalPersona Personal 4.11 and AuthenTec inc. AES2501A driver, restart and reinstall them. Still it shows the same error message.

So I try something unusual, I swap my finger down to up (Unusual direction) instead of up to down (usual direction), and it detected my figure again. Isn’t it strange!!!

Anyone have any idea or solution for this issue please comment.
